About the Delta Housing Be Mine Society

We are networking for housing solutions for adults with intellectual disabilities.

We are a non-profit group based in Delta, BC, Canada. We started as a small group of very concerned parents of children with developmental disabilities. Many of our children have received services and attended programs offered by the Reach Child and Youth Society in Ladner.

As our children moved into adulthood, we became concerned about housing issues.

    • Where would our children live when we could no longer care for them?
    • Who would provide a home for them?

In 2016, we did a survey of adults with intellectual disabilities who were living in Delta. We wanted to know about their housing needs. At the time, there were no inclusive housing options available in Delta. Would these young adults be willing to relocate to another community for long-term inclusive housing?

The 2016 DHBMS Housing Survey revealed that 83% of Delta's adults with intellectual disabilities were living with family.  In other words, many were dependent upon aging parents for housing. Were would they live in the future? We were not surprised to learn that 90% of them wanted to stay in Delta.

For low income seniors

We have continued to advocate for adults with intellectual disabilities. Our focus has expanded to include low income seniors living in Delta.

These two populations have similar housing requirements:

    • They need stable, low cost rental accommodations.
    • If they are isolated, without people checking on them, they are at high risk.
    • Housing that provides them with social connections and support will allow them to thrive.

Our Goals

Advocacy and Public Policy

We want to provide advocacy so that we can influence public policy. By creating a registry of people who need inclusive housing in Delta, we can convince decision-makers to recognize the needs.

Member Education

We want to provide member education about topics related to living a full life in our community.

News Forum

We want to offer our members a news forum so that we can interact on topics related to inclusive housing.
